Suspension of bus service to go on:
Imphal, May 5: A meeting of the Inter-State Bus Association held at Hotel Imphal on Monday resolved to continue with the ongoing suspension of inter-State bus service.
Inter-State bus service along NH 39 was suspended since May 3 because of unaffordable monetary demands made at different check-posts and by numerous UG groups.
During the meeting, it was agreed to suspend tourist bus service until all the monetary demands from UG groups and the 'taxes' being levied at different check-posts are withdrawn.
Even as a joint meeting with civil society representatives was convened today to discuss the unfolding situation following suspension of inter-state bus service, the meeting has been deferred to another date as attendance from civil society representatives was poor.
On the other hand, because of the 120 hours economic blockade being imposed by ATSUM on national highways, a large number of loaded vehicles are being stranded on the highways unable to reach Imphal.

Nearly 4000 dead in Myanmar cyclone:
Yangon, May 5: The death toll from a devastating cyclone that swept through Myanmar has risen to almost 4,000, a State radio station said on Monday.
The radio station, broadcasting from the country's capital Naypyitaw, said that 2,879more people are unaccounted for in a single town, Bogalay, in the country's low-lying Irrawaddy River delta area where the storm wreaked the most havoc.
The government had previously put the death toll countrywide from Saturday's Cyclone Nargis at 351 before increasing it today to 3,939 .
The storm has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and without clean drinking water, said Richard Horsey, a spokesman in Bangkok, Thailand for United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Yangon, the country's biggest city, was without electricity except where gas-fed generators were available. Many roads remained littered with debris.
Officials from the military government met on Monday with representatives of international aid agencies to discuss providing assistance. Neighbouring Thailand announced that it would fly some aid in tomorrow.
The private aid agency World Vision said Myanmar's government had invited it "to provide assistance in the form of zinc sheets, tents, tarpaulins and medicine".
Responding to the calamity the United Nations had earlier assured on Sunday it would send a team to assess the situation on Monday.
