Protest over UG extortion:
Imphal, May 3: Employees of Manipur’s higher education department did not allow any outsider to enter the office by locking up the main gate on Saturday intensifying their protest against monetary demands from militant groups.
The employees said they could not work because of demands made by militant groups for certain percentages of the budget allocation of the department, contract work and supply orders.
"We did not allow anyone including government officials and teachers to come inside the office complex. We also did not allow entry of any files from outside the office," an official said.
This would continue for one week and the employees may intensify the agitation further if the "demands and pressures" were not withdrawn.
The employees expressed resentment that though the matter was informed to the government no concrete steps were coming.
Tribal students warn of indefinite blockade:
Imphal, May 3: The All Tribal Students Union, Manipur, has threatened to extend its six-day economic blockade if the state government does not respond positively to its demands by Sunday.
The union began the blockade yesterday, demanding an increase in the job quota for tribals in Manipur University from 7.5 per cent to 34.5 per cent. The union also wants the government to fill up the 1,000 vacant posts for teachers in government schools in the five hill districts.
Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Saturday met a delegation of the union in his office but they failed to reach an agreement. He is yet to invite the students for another meeting.
More than 30 loaded trucks have been stranded at Mao gate and nearly 100 trucks at Dimapur along the Imphal-Dimapur highway, while another 20 trucks have been stuck at Jiribam along National Highway 53 since Friday.
AE (IFC) Abductions decried:
Imphal, May 3: In protest against the abduction of Muhindro, who is an Assistant Engineer of IFC Department, people of Maphou village and its surrounding area staged a Wakat Meepham at Maphou Bazar on Saturday.
Organised jointly by Maphou Youth Club, Maphou Village Authority and Meira Paibis of Tumukhong and Thangjingpokpi, the protest demonstration decried abduction of the IFC official and demanded his immediate release.
AE Muhindro had been reportedly abducted by unidentified armed persons from his own quarters at Maphou village on the night of April 29. Muhindro was stationing in Maphou village to oversee the construction work of Thoubal Multipurpose Project, more popularly known as Maphou Dam or Mapithel Dam being taken under the IFC Department at the village.
According to some of the protestors who participated in the Wakat Meepham, AE Muhindro is a person who has been taking keen interest in taking up welfare programmes for people of Maphou and surrounding areas.
