Manipur Police beaten: Jalandhar, Dec 11: Manipur lost to Karnataka 1-6 (half time score 1-3) in the 56th All-India Police Hockey Championship at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here on Tuesday. Roshan Madappa struck thrice for Karnataka in the 3rd, 23rd and 27rd minutes, while NP Laxman Rao (43rd, 57th) and G Magesh (56th) scored the remaining goals. Turan scored the lone goal for the Manipur side in the 34th minute. Manipur were unable to convert none of their seven penalty corners. In another match, SSB beat Tripura 5-2 (half time 3-1). Syed Yasir Shamim scored three goals by converting penalty corners in the 11th, 30th and 54th minute. L. Joychandra Singh and Sanjit Singh added one each in the 17th and 59th minutes respectively for SSB. Study on women in Northeast

Crime against fairer sex on rise: Guwahati: The country's Northeast region, considered the safest for women, is fast losing its reputation with rising incidence of crime against women. A study by the Rashtriya Gramin Vikash Nidhi, a centrally backed development support organisation, shows that crime against women in the region on the rise. Insurgency in the region has only aggravated the situation with women bearing the brunt. While in the year 2001, the cases of rape, kidnap and sexual harassment were 758, 1070 and 850 respectively, the number of rape cases has gone up to 1000 in 2006. The cases of torture by husbands that stood at 1248 in 2001 too have gone up to 1944 last year. In 2002 the number of rape cases was 903, 2003 the figure is 1049 while the record number was in 2005 when the number rose to 1217, the study shows. Similarly cases of sexual harassment has gone up from 850 to nearly 900 in 2005 while there were as many as 99 dowry deaths in 2005 and 67 last year. The fi...

Advani assures support to Manipur all party team: Imphal, Dec 10: Delegates of the state all political party forum currently in New Delhi to campaign for delinking Manipur from the delimitation process met with the Opposition leader of the Lok Sabha, LK Advani on Monday seeking his support for their demand seeking a halt to the delimitation process in the state. Oken Jeet Sandham becomes Jury Member in SEA Games: Korat, (Thailand), Dec 10: Oken Jeet Sandham has become not only the first from India but also from the whole of South Asian countries to have officially conducted as Jury Member in the ongoing 24th SEA Games in the discipline of Muaythai here at the Gymnasium I, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. He was earlier officially nominated as Jury Member for the 24th SEA Games by the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA). Just before the 24th SEA Games started in this Northeastern Province of Thailand, he was in the 2007 World Muaythai Championship with a strong 16-Member Indian Muaythai Team at Fashion Island, Bangkok. 1st Manipur Ranking Tennis Tournament

Shaolin, Yaiphabi emerge champions: Imphal: Ch Shaolin won the men’s and Y Yaiphabi the women’s titles in the 1st Manipur Ranking Tennis Tournament 2007 organised by Manipur Tennis Association sponsored by Manipur Police Housing Corporation held at Lamphelpat Officers Club tennis court on Sunday. In the women’s final, two top women players of the state Y. Yaiphabi and S Sonia clashed for the title. Y Yaiphabi defeated S Sonia 2-0. The first set was evenly contested with Yaiphabi winning 7-5. But in the second set it was Yaiphabi all the way and demolished Sonia 6-0. In the mens’ singles open final match, Ch Shaolin beat N Premjit 6-3, 6-1. The mens single open winner Shaolin was presented a momento and cash prize of Rs. 40,000 while the runners-up N Premjit recielved Rs. 20,000 with a momento. Manipur wins five medals: Imphal, Dec 10: With a total haul of 3 gold and 2 silver medals, the state men’s team won the 27th National Junior Taekwondo Championship 2007 as their female counterparts also emulated the feat at Margao (Goa) with 1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. The gold medal winners of the state are S Johny (featherweight), T Premjit (lightweight), A Naobi (light heavy) and S Surbala (lightweight). 68th Nupi Lan Day

Commemoration on Tuesday: Imphal, Dec 10: Like in previous years, Nupi Lan Ningshing Thouram (Memorial Observance) will be organised by different women’s organisations in different parts of the state on Tuesday in commemoration of the 1939 women’s agitation against artificial scarcity of rice and social injustice. The Nupi Lan Observation Committee will be organising its 68th Nupi Lan Ningshing Thouram along with taking out a mass public rally from Chingei ground of Moirang. To pay homage to the brave ‘Imas’ who sacrificed their lives for the cause of social justice, torches would be lit at night to mark the occasion. All Manipur Muslim Women Cultural Organisation would also be observing Nupi Lan at the ground of A Gani English High School at Minuthong Hatta.
