Manipur's Sarungbam Athouba Meitei won the first gold of 38th National Games in men's triathlon in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, on January 26. Another Manipuri player Telheiba Soram took the silver medal. Maharashtra’s Parth Sachin Mirage claimed the bronze.
The official opening ceremony of the National Games will be held on January 28, but the triathlon event began two days ahead of it.
Triathlon is an endurance multi-sport race consisting of swimming, cycling and running over various distances.
Athouba completed the race in 1:01:01s. His performance included a swim time of 09:55 minutes, a bike segment of 31:53 minutes, and a run time of 18:09 minutes.

Life size statue to be installed at Konung Mamang: Imphal, Dec 23: The Manipur government is considering installation of a life size statue of Thangal General, one of the two national heroes of Manipur who was hanged in public on 13th August, 1891 by the British after the historic Anglo-Manipur war in 1891, at Konung Mamang near RDS High School. A proposal for the installation of the statue, for which the funds were earmarked during this current financial year, has been received from the state arts and culture department by the state government and a Cabinet decision is awaited, the source said. The installation of the life size bronze statue of Thangal General is felt highly appropriate in the interest of the general public, the official said recalling the life of the national hero who sacrificed his life for the motherland.
